Thanks to
the new interview (translation here) in the Otomedia magazine with studio Mappa’s producer Otsuka,
we got some interesting and very positive things revealed to us:
- Viktor’s
return to skating and Yuuri’s decision not to retire is the final decision of their
coach-skater relationship- This is the
culmination of Kubo-sensei’s and Yamamoto’s decision to draw on the theme of
love until the very end- If Yuuri
had won gold he might actually have retired, and that was never the goal of the
story- As suspected,
even if Viktor won all his competitions easily, he felt stumped by his most
recent medals. This is where Yuuri swoops into his life and asks Viktor to
coach him. Viktor felt this could be the change he needed.- Yuuri keeps
surprising Viktor both as a skater and in private, and Viktor is drawn to him
as a person and influenced by him- Viktor was
used to winning alone, but through the influence of the other skaters in the
season, his interest in skating was rekindled.- The two
Yuri’s beating his world records awoke the competitive spirit in him again, and
by returning to the ice, Yuuri decided to remain as well- Yuuri’s
decision was also influenced by Yurio’s performance, where Yurio with all his
might showed him that he wants to win against him- Yuuri’s and Viktor’s relationship is drawn
around love, and
bonds with others. Yuuri and Yurio’s relationship is about doing one’s best- Otabek wanted to be friends with Yurio because he felt lonely as a skater so focused
on pursuing strength- For Viktor and Yuuri, their coach-skater
relationship is just the outer layer of their connection- Viktor saved Yuuri when he was standing at the
edge of a cliff, but Viktor needs Yuuri just as much in return- They met when Yuuri was miserable and Viktor
felt that he was losing sight of something in his life; when they both needed
change- They completed each other and found a new path
to follow ahead of them- When Yuuri says he has no name to describe this
feeling, it captures their relationship well- Viktor’s and Yuuri’s
relationship has transcended love and gone even beyond that. They push each other in the best direction possible- Kubo and
Yamamoto wanted to surprise the audience, just as Viktor. When you write scenes
that leave room for different interpretations there’s a risk it won’t sit right
with some people, but they plunged ahead with no hesitation- It is once again said that Kubo-sensei and
director Yamamoto wants to work on Yuri on Ice for as long as possible- If they wish to
continue, Otsuka and studio Mappa will stand by them and let them do whatever
they wish
