I saw a tweet on twitter about how Yuuri might regret having Victor back in competition because there’s no way he’s going to win now. It used Yuuri’s GPF score this year and compared it to Victor’s last year, and it had… a lot of retweets.
I’m here to say that is nonsense.
We have contextual, in series evidence that Yuuri absolutely can beat Victor. This isn’t a pipe dream or even “oh Yuuri could beat Victor on a bad day”. He could beat a very good Victor, if not possibly yet, an at his very best Victor. We SEE him breaking Victor’s free program world record.
Let’s look at Yuuri’s two highest scores of the season for his programs:
Short program; Rostelecom Cup: 109.97
Free Program; Grand Prix Final: 221.58
This means that if he had performed both of those skates at one competition, that would have given him a score of 331.58.
At the previous GPF Victor’s score was 335.76. This is implied to be a record breaking score within the universe. To get this score, Victor had to be at his best at the GPF. It wasn’t mediocre Victor that night. It wasn’t good Victor. It was great Victor. He was miles above the rest of the competition (I think the next ranked was like 300??).
I don’t even really need to get detailed wrt to scoring to explain how Yuuri can beat that. Yuuri’s score had he skated those two programs at one competition would have been only 4.18 behind Victor’s. This is certainly a margin that Yuuri can close with tweaking of his programs/perhaps a couple changes in his elements.
And more so, Yuuri’s short program score of 109.97 is from BEFORE he added the quad flip, a jump that has a base value of about two points higher than the toe loop he previously had in its place.
If Yuuri, at the skill level he’s achieved, were to skate his absolute best, he’d have a decent chance of beating Victor. Its not a far off, ridiculous goal. It’s real and plausible and completely within his reach.
Just saw someone going on about how Victor was going to wipe the floor and be unbeatable even by Yuuri AGAIN on twitter, and I had to reblog this again. I also did want to add, that from what we’ve seen, Yuuri’s the one with combined scores closest to his:
JJ’s best of the best:
- SP: 113.56 (Rostelecom, noted to be higher than his score at Skate Canada)
- FS: 213.91 (GPF. I’m assuming as much here. We actually don’t see his FS score at Rostelecom)
- Combined total: 327.91
Yurio’s best of the best:
- SP: 118.56 (GPF)
- FS: 200.97 (his score at Rostelcom cup was 199.87 and as this is implied by Yurio himself to be a better free skate than his Skate Canada free skate, I’m going to assume it was a higher score thus the GPF is his highest)
- Combined total: 319.53
These are the characters whose scores really have a chance of coming close to Victor and Yuuri’s, and as you can see, there’s still a gap. Not only can Yuuri beat Victor, but he’s likely the one with the best chance of doing it.

i promise i’ll shut up after this, but the other weird thing about pitting two pairings like victor/yuuri and otabek/yurio against each other (besides the super obvious, which is that they’re in no way contradictory, plenty of people like both, and different pairings can fill different needs or likes for people) – the other weird thing is, man, setting up your pairing as the Gallant to another’s Goofus is such an easy way to make it boring.
like, honestly, i love victor/yuuri as a pairing so much it’s pretty much sickening and they take up a significant amount of my daily thoughts. and yet whenever i see someone setting them up as a Virtuous and Morally Pure and Cage Free Organic Unblemished Pairing, my eyes start to glaze over a little. It makes me forget the reasons I really do love them in the wake of people’s reasons why they ought to be appreciated; like food being consumed for vitamins rather than deliciousness.
I just laugh when people try to set them up as the #goals couple. Victor and Yuuri have THE WORST COMMUNICATION. Yuuri gives Victor a wedding ring and then the next day tries to fire him without notice! That’s shabby treatment for any coach, let alone your fiance. It’s especially a shitty thing to do to someone in the middle of his first season trying to establish himself as a coach! It’s a perfect example of the folly of attempting to be noble and selfless without actually talking to the person you’re trying to sacrifice yourself for.
And if Victor is genuinely going to try to coach and compete at the same time just to please Yuuri? Two full-time jobs, one of which requires him to function at the peak of fitness? Then their relationship is bad for Victor, until they actually communicate and figure this out.
WHICH IS FINE. They’re in their twenties! There’s no indication either of them have had serious long-term relationships before this! When the show starts, Yuuri just graduated college. Victor is just coming off 20 years neglecting “life and love.” Why would they have it all figured out yet? Why pretend they’re 100% healthy and perfect when they’ve known each other less than a year and they’re still trying to figure themselves out, let alone figure out how their lives could fit together?

You know, the Richard Spencer getting punched thing has made it VERY clear which groups of people I’m not actually safe around, if push comes to shove. People who had SAID that they’d defend Jewish people, or even promised that, if shit hit the fan, they’d hide me, have said that this was inexcusable, and now I’m not wasting emotional energy on them. Because they won’t.
If you think you’d have hidden Jews during the Holocaust, but think that punching Richard Spencer was “inexcusable,” then you’re kidding yourself.
I encourage everyone to reblog this!
