Neil lets himself get distracted instead by the shadows on Andrew’s hands, the forming bruises and the split skin along his knuckles. He takes Andrew’s hand to inspect the damage, wondering at how something so strong can be so fragile—or is it the other way around?. If he turns their hands over he can see the wreckage Lola left behind on his own skin, the distorted scars that will always stand out more than he wants them to.  [..]

It’s a hand, Andrew says, not a question, but not quite mockery, when Neil’s gaze lingers a little too long.

It’s your hand, Neil says, and doesn’t bother to explain. Instead he slips his fingers through Andrew’s and digs in like he can leave his fingerprints on Andrew’s pale skin.

Things that feel something like love:

  • Neil returning from an out of state press event and fitting himself to Andrew’s side on their couch, thigh to thigh. The small bump of Neil’s head to Andrew’s shoulder, Andrew’s raised eyebrow, Neil’s quiet “I’m glad I’m home,” and Andrew’s warm press of lips
  • The drag of fingers across Neil’s back in the morning as they move around each other in the kitchen
  • The mug of hot chocolate Neil hands to Andrew during his blank days, when the scorching heat in his palm and the sight of Neil quietly working in the corner of the his eye are the only things threatening to get through
  • King getting sick and Andrew throwing Neil a look that says “your cat, your problem” but dialing the vet as Neil goes to clean up the mess
  • The small sigh against Andrew’s neck when he drags his nails over the back of Neil’s scalp
  • Andrew rolling over into the now-vacant, body-warmed spot on their bed and burying his head in the first pillow he can find
  • Weight and pull and gravity. Andrew’s hand on the back of Neil’s neck, a new car key being added to Andrew’s ring. Belt loops that bring hips knocking into each other, the tugging of a gym bag strap that means “let’s go home.” Spending 2 years falling into and out of alignment just to get to a place where they can permanently circle one another.

Their I love you is in their kisses, in Andrew’s trust the first time he lets Neil push him down, in Andrew & Neil playing together until they’re old enough to retire and then staying together because Exy isn’t the glue between them after all. It’s in the keys to their apartment in Colorado, the car with both names on it, the cats they get from the shelter.

Their I love you is in their Stay, in their Don’t Go, in their Welcome Home, in fingers hooked in belt loops and lingering looks across a room, and they wouldn’t have it any other way. [x]

“Maybe I got tired of seeing Kevin bend. Or maybe it was the zombies.”
When Andrew just stared at him, Neil shrugged and said, “A few weeks back you and Renee argued contingency plans for a zombie apocalypse. She said she’d focus on survivors. You said you’d go back for some of us. Five of us,” Neil said, splaying his fingers at Andrew. “You weren’t counting Abby or Coach. Since you trust Renee to handle the rest of the team, I’m guessing the last spot is for Dobson.”
He knew Andrew wouldn’t answer that, so he dropped his hand and said, “I didn’t say anything then because I knew I’d only look out for me when the world went to hell. I don’t want to be that person anymore. I want to go back for y o u.”

this was inspired by something @key-called-home said, but i don’t remember what. i dont know if it makes any sense bc i just kinda put everything out there and it made me cry but oh well enjoy

Here he is. With his back against the wall, face turned towards
Neil, here he is. There’s a cat in between them, and one at Andrew’s feet, the
window must not be closed all the way because cold, biting wisps of air hit
Andrew’s face, but here he is. Neil’s eyes are closed, and it’s a rare occasion
when Andrew gets to see him like this. He looks, for all intents and purposes,
like he shouldn’t be here. Fast asleep he looks a lot less like the smart mouth
Andrew knows and a lot more like someone who should never have been with The
Foxes to start with, but here he is.

He is here.
