Natsume Yuujinchou, Hitoyoshi, 2008~?; Hitoyoshi City, Kumamoto prefecture, 2017

Hitoyoshi City
(人吉市) was one of those areas in Kumamoto I’ve wanted to do for an unbelievably long while now because of my unabashed love for Natsume Yuujinchou, and finally the time has come! But it was also one of those trips where small oversights meant huge misadventures along the way. I actually passed by a few locations without knowing they were scenes from the anime till later, though they mostly came from areas out of Hitoyoshi (like Kumamoto and
Yatsushiro

station). ”You should have done your homework properly”, I remind my inner child. But ah, such is life.

The places featured are: 1~3:Tengu Bridge (天狗橋)
4~5: Hitoyoshi Station (人吉駅), 6~7: Tamachi Sugawara Tenmangu Shrine(田町菅原天満宮)
8: Kuma-gawa/Kuma River
(球磨川) 9~10:Hitoyoshi Castle ruins park (人吉城跡). Not a bad roundup, all things considered.

Dr. Seuss was not even in the general area of fucking around.

#everyone thinks of dr seuss as some sweet old guy who wrote kids books and made up cute words#little do they know he was the most hardcore political motherfucker to ever draw cartoons for newspapers of all time basically#he was of german and jewish descent and got bullied a lot as a kid#then he grew up and drew cartoons for the school paper#and when he got fired for being to fucking real for the paper to handle he made up a new name and KEPT SUBMITTING THEM ANYWAY#BECAUSE HE NEVER FUCKED AROUND FOR A SECOND#DID YOU KNOW DR SEUSS DID A FEATURE LENGTH DOCUMENTARY AFTER WWII ABOUT HOW WWII WASN’T ACTUALLY OVER AND THE NAZIS WERE STILL ALL AROUND#IT WAS CREEPY AS ALL FUCK AND MORE HARDCORE THAN YOU WILL EVER KNOW#IT WON A FUCKING OSCAR OR SOME SHIT#HE DID KIDS BOOKS ON A WHIM HIS REAL TALENT WAS DISMANTLING FASCIST REGIMES WITH ADORABLE BLACK AND WHITE SKETCHES OF TURTLES#OH YEAH AND YURTLE THE TURTLE WAS ABOUT HITLER#AND THE SNEECHES WERE ABOUT SEGREGATION#SO FUCK Y’ALL AND YOUR CANDY-ASS VISION OF DR SEUSS

I think almost all of his stories have a deeper meaning and Horton Hears a who was written as an apology to the Japanese after WWII

Holy guac

Also the Pro-life movement used his line “a person’s a person no matter how small” on their literature without his permission, and he made them stop using it an apologize because he was pro-choice.

okay but before reading the caption I thought these were contemporary cartoons in the style of dr suess, and the fact that these are so relevant again is pretty scary

technology related sensory memories from my childhood

  • sliding the metal cover on floppy disks
  • the slight resistance of inserting cassette and video tapes
  • ripping off the strips of holed paper off of dot matrix printer paper
  • rolling the wheel on a disposable camera to take another photo

The heaviness and rubber texture of the roller ball in a computer mouse, and the little ring of lint

Unkinking the curly cord of a telephone while you talked

The -peww sound and slowly fading image of a crt monitor turning off, and then running your finger through the static on the dusty glass

The crunch of opening or closing a plastic Disney vhs cover

The sound effects in kidpix

Extending and collapsing metal antennas and using them as magic wands

…God, it is so weird these things aren’t around any more. Cause it’s true, the sensations are so distinct. It’s bizarre to think about missing these tiny relics.
