Nicky and Andrew both find Neil extremely attractive and if them having similar tastes in guys isn’t hilarious, then I don’t know what is.
Andrew: *meets Erik* oh
Andrew to Andrew: *spray bottle in hand* I think the fuck not you trick ass bitchthe real reason nicky was pissed about roland knowing andrew was gay is that nicky and roland have totally fooled around before
Nicky likes to jokingly flirt with Kevin or talk about how hot Kevin is. Andrew finds Kevin’s personality annoying and would prefer it if Nicky didn’t constantly remind him of how attractive Kevin is.
Imagine this …
Nicky’s really into joke books. Erik sends him one for his birthday during his final year of college and he can’t stop reading them out to the Foxes at any given opportunity.
His sole mission in life becomes to make Andrew smile at one of his terrible jokes. He pops up, book in hand, going, “hey Andrew, what kind of cheese can you use to hide a horse?
“Mascarpone!”
Neil’s never heard crappy jokes like this before; he never had the opportunity while on the run to be exposed to mindless comedy. He finds them hilarious, and giggles at them with a childlike joy. He’s usually in the room when Nicky’s trying (and failing) to involve Andrew in a Knock Knock joke, and starts joining in from a corner in order to hear the terrible punchline.
Andrew doesn’t care about Nicky’s annoying, failed attempts to make him smile as long as he keeps coaxing that gleeful laughter out of Neil.
Neil starts researching his own jokes and telling them to Andrew when they’re alone. Andrew doesn’t mind nearly as much as he thought he would, and even indulges Neil with a “who’s there?” on occasion.
One day they’re in the locker room together and Andrew goes, in the most deadpan voice, “what’s the difference between ignorance and apathy?”
Neil just blinks at him, because he’s sure Andrew just started telling him a joke. “What’s the difference?” he asks finally.
Andrew sits across from him and leans back against the lockers. “I don’t know and I don’t care.”
And Neil gets it. And it’s just so Andrew. And he is delighted. He grins so wide he thinks his face might crack as his shoulders shake with silent laughter, partly at the joke but mainly at the joy he feels staring at the person who told it.
And Andrew smiles right back at him.
Meanwhile, Nicky is backing away from the locker room door silently, before booking it back to the rest of the foxes, complaining, “of course Andrew would only laugh at his own jokes,” and, “I’ve been trying for months, but he’ll smile for Neil at the drop of a hat. I’m his cousin.”
And although he doesn’t understand the Andrew he sees with Neil, he’s just so happy that he exists. God knows they both deserve it.
DO NOT:
-tell them to go to their rooms (they will not come out)
-threaten to revoke their privileges when they don’t do something (they will do it anyway)
-threaten to not give them dinner when they do something (they will accept it and not eat at all)
-ground them (they will not come out either)
-yell at them (they will ignore you for hours)
-!!!! tell them you want to go back to germany (they will give you reasons to and encourage you to)
Nicky: *throws open the door*
Nicky: So you two ARE having sex!
Neil and Andrew: *sitting on the bed, reading books*
Andrew: We are? Neil, why didn’t you tell me? I would’ve put down my book.
neil paints his nails because fuck gender roles and when nicky sees for the first time he just starts laughing uncontrolably like doubled-over-can’t-breathe laughing and neil is 103% ready to fuck him up if he says something rude about it but the only thing that comes out of his mouth when he has enough air to breathe again after a solid few minutes is “neil polish”
dysfunctional-college-roommates:
Okay but Nicky is such a fascinating character
Like honest-to-God one of the most amazing to me
Because everyone likes to treat him as comic relief and such? Which I mean you’re not wrong he is a spot of sunshine in this mess of a family
But think about teenage Nicky, coming so very close to the edge and traveling halfway across the world just to be pulled back
Nicky who has finally come to terms with his sexuality, managed his depression, is happy with a fiancee and a future
Who decides, on the spur of the moment, to drop all of that to come back and look after the twins
There’s nothing to suggest he and Aaron were ever close
He doesn’t even know Andrew
Its not even like they don’t have anyone else, his parents COULD take them in, and he’s practically a kid himself no one could be expecting him to take responsibility for a pair of traumatized teenagers
But he wants to protect these two boys, even though he’s just a little older than they are, even though it means putting his own life on hold
He leaves his fiancee and his world that HE made for himself and HE fought for, fought back from the edge for
To come back to the place that almost killed him, to work stupid waiting and bartending jobs, just so he can take care of his cousins who seem like they couldn’t care less
And he never reacts. He never guilts them or acts as though they owe him something. Andrew attacks him on a regular basis and Aaron treats him like he’s some stupid pet and he still stays and fights for them
Yes Nicky is funny and light and a spot of sunshine in this mess of a family
But he is also so good and loyal and selfless and has so much more /depth/ than you would think
And I just. I need more people talking about this please.
What about the fact that Nicky refuses to give up on family? He keeps trying, and trying, and believing that Andrew and Aaron can make up and be a family and that he can be part of it, even though he showed up during what must have been the worst of their relationship. But he never gives up, and he latches onto any hope that he can.
And he doesn’t give up on his parents, either – not for years. He knows that they don’t accept him, but he never gives up hope. He never stops thinking, maybe this will be the time. Maybe this time, they’ll understand me for who I am.
That is, he doesn’t give up until his parents do the unthinkable and actually facilitate physical harm instead of only psychological. But the amazing thing about Nicky? He still doesn’t give up on family. He chooses instead to follow his own advice, and define his family not by his blood, but by who he can rely on – those he chooses to stand by, and those who choose to stand by him.
Erik. The Foxes. That is his family, and he is never giving up on them.
Allison: *walks into the locker room with Starbucks* ‘sup heteros
Nicky: *stops taking off his shirt to stare at Allison* what the fuck did you just call me
you can bet your ass nicky has at least once asked neil If The Carpet Matches The Drapes after finding out his hair is actually red
Nicky: The results are in and I’m afraid you have updog.
Neil: What’s updog?
Nicky: Aaron! Get in here, I told you I could do it!
