notetoself-thisisserious:

Hopelessly adrift

He’d never even thought about it.

It had always seemed like such and obscure thing, yet another part of human nature and relationships he didn’t understand.

He’d heard Nicky talk about it – desperate and nine colourful vodka mixes down, lip worried over the years- as he sat on the couch and fretted that Eric could possibly want someone other than him, could move on.

They were so far apart, so far away. Even though texts and calls, these things happened.

Neil, uncomfortable and confused at exactly what he could possibly say, said nothing.

He didn’t understand love. He didn’t understand attraction.

He didn’t know how time and space could change a truth so solid in your chest.

But he’d never been like the others.

He didn’t swing, he only wanted Andrew.

Maybe that was the problem.

It wasn’t until Andrew graduated, left, and the Palmetto Fox team was all talking about Valentines day – yet another tradition he still didn’t understand- that something grew.

It started as a niggle, a wayward thought. A simple passing idea that floated through his mind like a breeze with nothing to latch onto.

But then it caught, marking the edges of his mind on it’s way past, leaving a tiny scratch, a tear, barely noticeable in the light of day.

There was late night phone calls, texts. Words and voices and, for a moment, a life shared.

But then that scratch started to itch.

Andrew had always found him interesting, always strived and fought and dealed to uncover his truths and solve the problem he’d proclaimed Neil to be.

But, Neil was no longer a mystery. He no longer had secrets to trade, nor was he in anyway remarkable.

Attraction was a foreign concept, but he supposed Andrew found him attractive, found him worth a second look, a second touch.

But time had passed, and Andrew had moved on, moved away, found a purpose to fill his days and a routine to structure his life.

But what about nights?

Neil wasn’t insecure, and this train of thought was just as foreign and unsettling to him because he had no idea how to process this new development.

Thrashing it out on the Exy court provided no relief.

So the wound went untreated.

And festered.

No promises had been made between them, not in this, and Neil had no desire to even think about trapping Andrew’s into a deal he knew the other would hold. Not in this.

Never in this.

Andrew had been hurt and abused by too many and Neil would never begrudge him taking back the control of his body he had so long been denied. To take back what he was owed and to finally want.

Andrew was free to explore and chose and Neil wouldn’t dare think to take that away from him. Not ever.

But it left him hopelessly adrift.

A familiar feeling, but in an entirely difference sense. It was the uncertainty, the unknowing, throwing everything to the wind without any escape plan. Without any desire for an escape plan when all he wanted was to stay home.

Andrews past ‘hookups’ had never been discussed, although Neil was aware of a history with Roland. That path was far too treacherous to walk, filled with landmines and dark pools that neither wanted to poison the air with.

But Andrew was a man. A gay man. And Neil suspected Andrew felt attraction to certain types of men more similar to the way others of that sexuality did.

Andrew had needs and desires, more so in later years as he’d grown comfortable in accepting and acknowledging them.

As he’d separated them from the abuse he’d suffered.

Neil had been an outlet for that. And, eventually, a hard battled safezone. A willing participant in whatever Andrew had needed and wanted who never asked for anything.

But now.. Now maybe he wanted to ask.

But he shook that treacherous thought away as selfish.

He’d gotten more than he’d ever thought and now, with this distance, maybe Andrew would look for something closer to home –his home- to satisfy his carnal needs and release his tension.

Maybe Neil would no longer be useful or interesting.

Maybe Andrew would just grow bored.

They would always be connected, like two Atoms circling each other in a semblance of frictionous harmony, but maybe Andrew would spot someone else who captured his attention, less scarred and more interesting.

Someone else he could trust enough to touch.

And maybe that would hurt Neil a whole lot more than he dared even admit.

Maybe that would be another scar to add to his marred and countless collection.

Maybe it would hurt the most.

“Hey,”
Kevin says as soon as Neil picks up, “are you home this weekend?”

Neil
glances at the calendar tacked to the kitchen wall. The two cases are colored
gray but empty.

“Sure,” he
says. “Why?”

There’s
shuffling on the other side of the phone. Kevin sounds distracted, his
inability to concentrate on two things at once evident. “We were driving to
Thea’s parents’,” he says, “but her father’s in the hospital.”

The
coffeemaker beeps when it’s done, and Neil pours himself a mug. He’ll need it,
if he wants to follow Kevin’s complicated conclusions.

“Okay?”

‘You like me because I’m a scoundrel. There aren’t enough scoundrels in your life.’

for @minyardjostenrivalry

When Neil came to Palmetto State University, it was to play exy. He didn’t expect the group costumes each Halloween. The first year is Star Wars-themed, and Andrew is, surprisingly, spearheading the effort.

He has a spreadsheet of who each of the foxes has to be for the costume to work. He doesn’t say much, just sends out an email with the details to each of the team members. He CC’s Wymack, who apparently had appointed himself costume chaperone after last year’s incident — no one will actually tell Neil what it was.

When Neil gets the email, he almost deletes it, but Matt stops him before he does.

“Why did you do that?” Neil asks.

Matt grins. “The costumes are so much fun. Plus, Andrew will probably kill you if you don’t at least do something. Even Kevin does it. We make the school’s Instagram every year.”

Neil frowns. He really doesn’t want to be involved in more stuff. He’s already failed spectacularly at flying under the radar, and he doesn’t want to make things worse.

One day after practice, Matt offers to take him shopping, and Neil sighs. He doesn’t want to do it, but Matt is persistent, and he can feel Andrew’s eyes on him from across the court. Neil turns and makes eye contact with Andrew. Andrew merely raises an eyebrow, but Neil reads the challenge in his expression.

He turns to Matt and agrees to go with him.

5 p.m., the day of Halloween, Neil is standing in front of the mirror, pulling at his clothes. He saw Star Wars once, when he was little and his nanny at the time was more lenient than most. He adjusts the toy blaster at his hip. Matt is standing behind him, mask sitting on top of his head and grinning widely.

“Ok, let’s go,” Neil huffs.

Matt thumps him on the back. “Let’s do this!”

Neil and Matt join the others, who are gathered in Dan’s room. Renee is wearing a knee-length dress patterned to look like R2D2, and Allison is standing next to her. Allison is clad entirely in gold: gold stilettos, gold stockings, a gold miniskirt, a gold crop top, gold nails, gold earrings, a gold headband, and gold glasses.

“Who are you supposed to be?” Neil asks her.

Allison rolls her eyes. “C3fuckyou.”

Dan snorts. She’s dressed in blue and black with a blue and gold cape on her shoulders — Lando, Neil remembers. Her cocky smile and short, curly hair make her perfect for it.

Matt roars, and Neil jumps. He spins around to look at Matt accusingly. Matt lifts his mask up. “What? I’m in character. Chewie only roars.”

Nicky is, unsurprisingly, in Leia’s slave bikini. He keeps striking poses and pouting. Kevin is standing near him, dressed entirely in beige robes and looking incredibly uncomfortable. He’s Ben Kenobi, Neil realizes. A very grumpy Ben Kenobi.

Aaron is there, but not wearing a costume. Neil furrows his eyebrows, wondering why he’s the only one not in costume.

Andrew sees Neil wondering and answers for Aaron. “He’s here for the group picture. He’ll leave after.”

Aaron nods. Neil’s eyes finally fall to Andrew. Andrew is wearing a poncho and a bucket hat, and the corners of his mouth are curling into a smirk. Neil opens his mouth to ask, but then it hits him. He’s Luke Skywalker at his peak twink.

Neil wants to say something, but Andrew gives him a slow once over, and Neil flushes. He’s Han Solo, down the blaster and boots, and Matt coiffed his hair for him. Andrew is looking at him like he’s a piece of meat.

Neil puffs out his chest and gives Andrew his best cocky Han Solo smirk. “Hey,” he says.

A faint pink dusting appears on Andrew’s cheeks, and before Neil can say anything else, the door to Dan’s room violently swings open.

It’s Wymack, dressed in his usual clothes save for a baseball cap with a piece of paper taped to it that says “Millennium Falcon.”

“Let’s do this shit,” he booms.

#43 (“Would you just ask me already?”) or #92 (“You’re one insult away from starting a war.”) for Andreil maybe? <3

emmerrr:

hi! i’ve gone with #92 although i’ve tweaked it just a tiny bit. thanks for asking!

It starts

as most feuds start — with something small.

Halfway into Neil’s first season finally playing on Andrew’s team, they move out of Andrew’s tiny apartment and begin renting a bungalow in a quiet neighbourhood not too far from their training grounds.

It’s just temporary, for a year or so until they’ve decided whether or not they’re settled enough to buy a place. But in the meantime, it’s more spacious for the cats and is just a nicer place in general.

They get all moved in over one weekend, and when they get home from practice on Monday, Neil discovers a hand-delivered note in their mailbox.

It reads, in an erratically capitalised scroll:

Woken up at the CRACK OF DAWN by your OBNOXIOUSLY LOUD car! Please be more RESPECTFUL in the future! You’ve set a TERRIBLE first impression!!

Sincerely, an ANNOYED NEIGHBOUR

(part I) (part II) (part III)

The little fire fox
dances on the wall. Neil barely directs it, making him zip around the room
lazily.

Fire is dangerous.
He’s been told this his entire life by his mother. Mary bridled his magic; she
did it to keep him safe, and Neil is honestly aware of this fact. He’s
grateful, in a way, because he only acquired the painful burn scars after her
death, when he let his cover slip. Even in death she was right.

Fire cannot hurt him
anymore. Not because he’s been hurt too much already—pain is infinite, and
there is no such thing as a maximum threshold of it, that Neil knows—but
because fire can be snuffed out with one easy step.

It’s not dependence.
It would be, if Neil hadn’t also learned control. He’s not quite there with
Kevin’s deep focus and efficient way of honing his magic, but he’s worlds more
assured than he was when he arrived at the Foxhole. Neil’s strength is wilder
and less precise. He thinks of it as borrowing energy rather than harnessing
it, but Kevin’s been harnessed his whole life: unlearning this natural
hierarchy is a difficult task.

Andrew walks into the
room, and the fox is snuffed out mid-jump. Neil feels its loss down to his
fingertips, tingling with leftover energy.

“A fox,” Andrew says,
unimpressed. “Don’t you have enough of those downstairs?”
