me: Andrew Minyard didn’t look like much in person, blonde and five feet even, but Neil knew better. Andrew was the Foxes’ freshman goalkeeper and their deadliest investment. Most of the Foxes were self-destructive, whereas Andrew seemed keen on collateral damage. He’d spent three years

What she says: I’m fine

What she means: In the chapter where Neil is being tortured by his father he reaches up when his father is choking him and squeezing his cuts but stops before he touches him because he’s been conditioned from a young age that trying to stop his father/touching him he will get hurt even more. With Neil and Andrew’s relationship being based on trust and the fact that Neil can respect boundaries and asks before he touches Andrew, I wonder how Andrew would take it if he learnt that it’s probably partly because it was literally beaten into Neil when he was younger.

cressworthy:

“They never pried, but it took him weeks to realize they didn’t have to. They didn’t ask for secrets; they settled for the breadcrumb truths of day to day life. They knew he hated vegetables but loved fruit, that his favorite color was gray, and that he didn’t like movies or loud music. They were things Neil understood only in terms of survival, but his teammates hoarded these insights like gold. They were piecing Neil together and building a real person around all of his lies. They found the parts of him no disguise could change.”
