i’ll also be there, with bells on. it bothers me deeply that both the canon characters and half the fandom think it’s hilarious that kevin’s scared of riko, because jesus— if he weren’t, he’d be one dumb motherfucker. 

here’s the thing: riko is not some lame-ass high school bully that will back off if you stand up to him. he’s no longer a scared kid who is sad his dad doesn’t love him, he’s a psychopath with a hell of a lot of reach and power, and who has lost touch with reality to the extent where he doesn’t even recognise the boundaries of that scope and power and thinks he has more. 

this is the man who tortured jean for years. the man who arranged andrew’s attack and subsequent abuse. the man who had seth murdered.

if you’re not afraid of riko, you’re on a swift road to trouble. 

example: neil. i love neil very much, but the reality is that his lack of fear would have seen him into the grave if andrew had been just two seconds slower to reach them in that final on-court scene. riko’s racquet got close enough for neil to hear the wind in the strings. he very nearly died— he would have died, if not for andrew. 

…but then, neil’s had someone protecting him for most of his life. first it was his mother (who admittedly did a questionable job, but at least she was there), and then it was andrew. most of his life, he had an example of someone who loved him and who taught him to stand up and to run rather than cower.

who did kevin have to watch his back all those years alone in the dark with riko? who did he have, to demonstrate that it was possible not to fear, or to show him how to fight back, or even to teach him to run?

oh, that’s right: nobody. he had nobody, except his own self. there was kevin and his fear and his secrets, and that was all.

and people wonder why he’s a coward who focuses on himself more than others? it’s because he’s had a lot to be afraid of, and nobody else to take care of him.
