Things that feel something like love:

  • Neil returning from an out of state press event and fitting himself to Andrew’s side on their couch, thigh to thigh. The small bump of Neil’s head to Andrew’s shoulder, Andrew’s raised eyebrow, Neil’s quiet “I’m glad I’m home,” and Andrew’s warm press of lips
  • The drag of fingers across Neil’s back in the morning as they move around each other in the kitchen
  • The mug of hot chocolate Neil hands to Andrew during his blank days, when the scorching heat in his palm and the sight of Neil quietly working in the corner of the his eye are the only things threatening to get through
  • King getting sick and Andrew throwing Neil a look that says “your cat, your problem” but dialing the vet as Neil goes to clean up the mess
  • The small sigh against Andrew’s neck when he drags his nails over the back of Neil’s scalp
  • Andrew rolling over into the now-vacant, body-warmed spot on their bed and burying his head in the first pillow he can find
  • Weight and pull and gravity. Andrew’s hand on the back of Neil’s neck, a new car key being added to Andrew’s ring. Belt loops that bring hips knocking into each other, the tugging of a gym bag strap that means “let’s go home.” Spending 2 years falling into and out of alignment just to get to a place where they can permanently circle one another.
