Yuri on Ice’s DVD/BD Sales (50K!!)

accioharo:

So you know how Yuri on Ice had those awesome sales, boasting 35k copies for its first volume in its first week alone? Pretty impressive, huh.

Turns out it was incorrect. Oricon had made a mistake in their sales rankings. They just updated, and it turns out that YOI has sold an incredible 50k copies in its first week; 35,453 BD and 14,513 DVD (so really, almost 51k)

This absolutely blows the top selling volumes of the majority of other super popular with female audience shows out of the water (Free’s top selling volume was 33k, and it outranks all but two volumes of Uta no Prince-sama, both of which there’s a very good chance it could surpass since this is just first week sales). And really, it blows most other big franchise sales out of the water period

To note, these sales were from only the first three days of YOI volume one’s release, so it should sell at least several thousand more, if not 10k+ more, and that’s a conservative estimate. Yuri on Ice will, at this rate, even with standard drops in volume sales, definitively be the best selling sports anime of all time, and the best selling tv anime title of 2016 behind Love Live! Sunshine, an already established franchise.

Thinking about the fact that this is an original project; written, directed, and conceived by two women, that had to be shopped around for years to different studios before MAPPA (a studio known for taking on projects that are creatively risky), finally agreed to animate it, I’m really amazed. To add to that, in the leadup to the fall season, YOI didn’t even rank very highly in the ‘audience anticipation polls’ that often help predict what will and what won’t be hits for the season, but YOI despite the lack of initial hype in Japan, managed to pull through in an absolutely massive way.

Congrats on your (continued) success Yuri on Ice, and to Kubo-sensei, Yamamoto-sensei, and Mappa! 50k is beyond outstanding.

(And thank you to @m–emrys who messaged me rightfully screaming about this at 5 am)
